In History of the Jews, Heinrich Graetz examines the origins and ascent of Judaism and the Jewish people in ancient times.
Graetz's sources include the holy ancient texts and the surviving historical manuscripts of the period in which Judaism commenced and grew in terms of both its adherents and regional influence. This edition of Graetz's History of the Jews contains his original notes, appended at the conclusion of the volume.

I bought this set on Kindle a while ago, and I wish the company that put it out would fix the line-spacing. They are way too close together. Other companies are fixing this (Oxford University Press just did with Anthony Kenny's "New History of Philosophy"), so I hope whoever put this out on Kindle will take the time to make the line spacing a little further apart, so it's easier to read. I learned the basic and only reason for Jewish Palestinian conflict the inability to co-exist. Look where it still is now, thousands of years hence. I also gained a deeper understanding of where Jesus came from, his DNA, and the plan of salvation. If you would rather not read the Old Testament, this is a good alternative.

It is very good.
I five starred the 1st volume because it filled in the blanks of Old Testament history for me. It is an easy read and flows very s smoothly from event to event.
The Old Testament does not always follow a narrative path, so the sequence of the story can be confused. History of the Jews does follow a narrative path, and incorporates the Biblical record so as to offer a context for the Sacred Scripture. It is well written and continues where the Old Testament ends. If you follow a traditional view of inspiration of the Scripture as I do you should be aware that Graetz does not seem to share this perspective. He favors two authors of Isaiah, and a very late date for the authorship of Job. Furthermore, he does not directly attribute divinity to the YHWH the Hebrews worship, rather he recognizes that the Hebrews attributed mighty deeds to YHWH.
Illuminates the ancient past recorded from centuries before Christ's birth in a exiting and interesting narrative. Of course never a dull moment.
I will never know what met or did not meet my expectations. The print was so small that I couldn't read the book. I don't mind books with somewhat small print, but this print seems suitable for ants or bumble bees at the far end of big, if they could read.
