Jack Reacher - six foot five and dangerous. Adrift in the hellish heat of Texas. Moving like a shark in the water. Looking for a lift through the vast empty landscape.

A Cadillac stops. A ride, but with a hitch. A pretty young woman, alone. Her husband's in jail. When he comes out, he's going to kill her.

Her family's hostile, she can't trust the cops, and lawyers won't help. Reacher is her last option. Will this be the first time he says no - to a lady in distress?

Reviews are funny. I often read negative reviews and think, "what was this guy expecting?'". After you've read a few of Lee Child's Jack Reached novels, you begin to know what to expect. The man gets out of a bus or a car that picked him up hitchhiking in some remote spot in the midwest or the South, and immediately stumbles into some major crime or conspiracy. There is a vulnerable girl involved, and he has to help her. I've come to like the dialog, the banter. Reacher is a master of facts, as if he memorized the almanac or Wikipedia. And he always kills the bad guy in the end. Personally, I enjoy these stories and Tom Cruise's excellent interpretation on the big screen. Keep them coming...it'll be a sad day when I 've read the last Jack Reacher book!

Echo Burning Jack Reacher 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Lee Child Kerry Shale Random House AudioBooks Books Reviews

Accidentally read this twice, having bought it in 2012. Well worth it.
Again, Lee Child writes with such thought; in other words Reacher is thinking all the time and he works it all out so much in his mind; and we think with him.
This is truly the main pleasure of Lee Child's Reacher books. He writes so cleverly that he leads one to believe that his Reacher books are chock block full of action. In fact that there is actually a lot less action than you think.
I read this book with all the enjoyment I usually experience with his books. Towards the end you will find some moments that might make you laugh, they did so with me anyway. Such amusing irony.
I have read a swag of classic literature; British, French, Russian and American. I have to state my belief that Lee Child is actually an exceedingly 'good' writer. Because how many writers; basically about one story, one character; have you come across that are still great after so many books?
I'm so sorry that it was number 17 and I have only three or four left. I will miss them.
Let me start by saying I am a HUGE Jack Reacher/Lee Child fan and have been avidly working my way through the entire series from beginning to end. That said, I found this particular book to be far below the usual standards and struggled to get through it. By the end I was skimming through long sections of the book just so I could reach the end, which is extremely unusual for me.

So why didn't I like it? A few reasons First, I found the plot to be extremely simplistic compared to what I am used to from Lee Child. There is really no depth at all to the plot, it is about as shallow a story as you can have and still claim to have a plot. No twists and turns, no in-depth backstory that drove the actions of the characters and nothing original at all. Same goes for the characters, they had about as much depth as a kiddie pool and really added nothing to the story at all. Lastly, for some odd reason even the Jack Reacher character seemed phoned in. Normally I enjoy the various quirks and oddities that make Jack unique, and Lee certainly tried hard to bring in more of these in this book, however they seemed really forced and frankly boring additions to the character that is Jack Reacher.

Bottom line, I felt this book read like a book that was an after-thought, as if this was the third installment on a 3 book contract and he used up all his time on the first 2. It will help pass the time on an airplane but is no where near the quality of the other Jack Reacher books I have read so far. Hopefully this is just an anomaly and not a sign of what I can expect in the ensuing books or I will be extremely disappointed.
Skip it! It is not like the other books. I actually gave up on it, which I didn't think would happen with a Reacher boook. Reacher is basically on a giant farm in the middle of nowhere. Why is he there you ask? Oh, because some frantic and paranoid woman wants him to kill her husband because he's abusive. The pacing is unusually slow for Lee Child. The side characters are stereotypical rednecks.

The book starts off with Reacher in a bar, he hits a guy he didn't know was a cop. Then, he wants to get out of dodge to not be holed up in a cell. That's a much more interesting premise than what the book is actually about.
This is my least favorite Reacher story. I totally disliked the heroine, Carmen...a tacky, tacky piece of work. I should have felt some sympathy for her, but I never did. I was surprised, shocked actually, that Reacher did. Carmen's plotting was so bizarre that it was laughable. Really. The main plot that wasn't evident until fairly late on the book was just as bad. The author, as usual, got the roads right, as I remember them, and the general topography. And the heat. He described that beautifully and accurately. But, he got most other things about Texas wrong. However, the end was pretty satisfying, which is why I gave this 3 stars instead of 2. If you're a Texan, I think you will hate this book, so beware. If you're from the north and have preconceived notions about Texas, you'll probably enjoy it.

Whatever..
